A weekend Umrah is realistic for residents of Saudi Arabia because the official weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, which gives two clear days plus Thursday evening. The transport plan is simple once you work backwards from your Nusuk permit time: one journey into Makkah, one or two nights in a hotel near the Haram, and one journey home, each booked at least 48 hours before its pickup. Most of the stress in a short trip comes from leaving the bookings until Wednesday, or from a pickup time that does not match the permit.

This guide is for residents in Jeddah, Riyadh, Taif and Madinah, Saudi and expatriate alike, who want a short trip without taking leave, and for relatives who book on their behalf. It explains how the weekend and the permit shape the plan, what the journeys look like from each city, how the 48-hour rule falls across a working week, how waiting and hotel times fit around a short stay, and what to do if something moves. It covers transport only. For the rites themselves, ask a qualified scholar and follow the official guidance in the Nusuk app.

Diagram of four steps for a weekend Umrah in two days: get the Nusuk permit time, book both journeys by Tuesday, travel into Makkah on Thursday or Friday, take the Saturday journey home

Why a weekend Umrah works for residents

The Saudi Press Agency’s report of the royal order on the weekly holiday sets the official working days as Sunday to Thursday, with the weekly holiday on Friday and Saturday. For many employees and school families, that means leaving after work on Thursday and returning on Saturday evening, ready for Sunday.

That shape suggests two common patterns:

Pattern Outward journey Nights in Makkah Return journey Suits
Thursday night to Saturday Thursday evening after work Two (Thursday and Friday) Saturday afternoon or evening Families who want an unhurried Umrah and time to rest
Friday to Saturday Friday morning One (Friday) Saturday Residents close to Makkah, or couples travelling light
Thursday night to Friday night Thursday evening One (Thursday) Friday evening Those who need Saturday at home

A weekend Umrah is very different from a week-long trip. There is no Makkah to Madinah leg, usually no outings, and very little slack. If you have more days, our 7 day Umrah itinerary plans the transport for a longer stay.

Start with the permit, then set the pickup time

The Saudi Press Agency describes the Nusuk app as the place to request Umrah permits, which grant access to the Two Holy Mosques based on approved capacity. For a two-day trip, the permit time is the fixed point, and every journey should be planned around it.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah’s frequently asked questions page addresses the questions weekend travellers ask most: whether you can attend an hour or more after the permit time, whether the Umrah time can be modified, whether you may enter the Haram before the permit time, and whether a permit can be cancelled after its appointment has started. Read the current answers there before you set a pickup time; we do not restate them, because they are the Ministry’s to set and they may change.

Then work backwards. Start from the permit time, allow for checking in or leaving bags at the hotel, allow for the road and for traffic on a Thursday evening, and add a margin. That gives the latest sensible pickup time. We do not quote journey times, so build a generous margin rather than trusting a single estimate.

How to do Umrah in 2 days: the transport side

How to do Umrah in 2 days is partly a religious question and partly a logistics one. The religious side is for your scholar. The logistics side usually needs just two booked journeys.

The outward journey

One journey, from your home, hotel or the airport to your Makkah hotel. If the whole family is travelling from one address, that is one pickup. If relatives are joining from two homes in the same city, add the second address as a stop in journey order; the planner allows up to eight stops on one journey.

If your family intends to stop at a miqat on the way, add it as a named stop and check its pin. Which miqat applies to you is for your scholar.

Your time in Makkah

For most weekend trips, no car is needed in Makkah itself. If you want a short visit, it is booked like any other journey, and a there-and-back visit is two journeys. From the Makkah Clock Tower to the Hira Cultural District is about 13 km, and to Masjid Aisha at Al-Taneem about 13 km on our live route checks. On a two-day trip, most families leave these for a longer visit.

The return journey

One journey from your Makkah hotel to home or to the airport. Book it at the same time as the outward journey. On a short trip there is no week of margin in which to arrange it later.

A short Umrah trip from Riyadh or Jeddah

A short Umrah trip from Riyadh or Jeddah looks quite different depending on where you start. This table compares the four cities where residents most often plan a weekend.

Starting city Usual approach Journeys we can drive Things to weigh
Jeddah Road from home Home to Makkah hotel; Makkah hotel to home Shortest trip of the four; Thursday evening traffic
Riyadh Flight to Jeddah, then a car Jeddah Airport to Makkah hotel; Makkah hotel to Jeddah Airport Flight times drive the whole plan
Taif Road Taif to Makkah hotel; Makkah hotel to Taif Short road leg; miqat question for your scholar
Madinah Road, or rail Madinah to Makkah hotel; Makkah hotel to Madinah About 439 km each way; a very full weekend

From Jeddah

Jeddah residents have the easiest weekend Umrah. From King Abdulaziz International Airport to central Makkah is about 94 to 97 km on our route checks; from a home in the city, type the address and check the distance in the route summary. Saudipedia’s list of railways in Saudi Arabia notes that the Haramain High Speed Railway serves Jeddah and Makkah, so some Jeddah families take the train; for timetables, check with the operator. A booked car suits families with children, older relatives or anyone who wants to go from the front door to the hotel.

From Riyadh

For most Riyadh families, a two-day Umrah means flying to Jeddah on Thursday evening and taking a car from the airport. Driving the whole way is possible, and our Riyadh to Makkah by road guide explains it, but it is a long day in each direction and leaves little of the weekend.

At checkout for the airport pickup, enter the flight number. Set the pickup time after the scheduled landing, allowing for reaching the kerb with bags, and add extra waiting if the flight is often late. For the flight home, the Makkah Hilton Jabal Omar to Jeddah Airport is about 91 km; our guide to the Makkah to Jeddah Airport journey explains how to time that pickup against a departure.

From Taif and Madinah

From the Makkah Clock Tower area to the Taif InterContinental is about 106 km on our live route checks, which makes Taif a comfortable weekend. From Madinah, Makkah is about 439 km by road, which makes a two-day trip possible but tiring; some Madinah residents prefer to add a third day when a public holiday allows.

The 48-hour rule across a working week

Online bookings need at least 48 hours’ notice before pickup. A search inside that window returns the message “This journey must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.” For a weekend trip, that turns into a simple rule of thumb: book both journeys by Tuesday.

Pickup Latest online booking
Thursday 8 pm Tuesday 8 pm
Friday 7 am Wednesday 7 am
Saturday 5 pm (return) Thursday 5 pm

All times are Saudi local time. The return deadline in the last row falls on Thursday, often the very day you travel, so booking both journeys together earlier in the week is the safer habit. Payment secures a provisional request; the booking team updates the status within 1 to 12 hours, and the journey is booked only when it reads Confirmed. Our guide to what the receipt and the confirmation each prove explains why the receipt alone is not enough.

Waiting and hotel times on a short stay

On a two-day trip, a few minutes lost at a hotel door can squeeze the time before your permit. Free waiting counts from the booked pickup time. Economy includes 15 minutes, then SAR 1.50 per minute. Business and Executive, the Staria VIP van and the H1 family van include 30 minutes, then SAR 2.00 per minute. Minibus and coach classes include 30 minutes, then SAR 2.50 per minute. The Premium SUV class includes 45 minutes, then SAR 2.50 per minute, and the Luxury class 60 minutes, then SAR 4.00 per minute.

Extra waiting can be added at checkout in 15-minute steps up to two hours, priced at the class’s per-minute rate, and the driver’s instructions show the total. It is most useful for an airport pickup on a Thursday evening flight, and for a Saturday checkout with children. Waiting beyond what was booked is never promised.

Arriving before check-in

A Friday morning arrival often reaches the hotel before the room is ready. Ask the hotel about leaving bags at reception; that is for the hotel to confirm. Our guide to the gap before a Makkah hotel’s check-in time has practical ideas.

Leaving on Saturday

Hotel checkout is usually earlier than a weekend family wants to leave. If your return pickup is late on Saturday, agree a late checkout with the hotel or plan where the family will wait, and set the pickup time for when everyone will genuinely be at the door.

Choosing a vehicle for a light weekend

Weekend travellers usually carry cabin bags rather than large cases, which widens the choice. An Economy car (Camry class) seats 4 with 2 large bags (3 in the Camry). Business and Executive seats 4 with 3 large bags. The Hyundai Staria seats 6 with 2 large bags, and the H1 family van 7 with 6. Enter every bag honestly, including cabin bags, because the search shows only classes that fit. Child seats and a wheelchair requirement can be added in the search.

Bringing children or older parents on a short trip

A weekend Umrah compresses everything, and that is hardest on the youngest and oldest travellers. A few booking details make the difference.

  • Wheelchair and child seats. Add a wheelchair requirement, infant seat, child seat or booster in the search itself, so they are confirmed for the vehicle rather than hoped for on the day.
  • Booking for someone else. If you book for parents who are travelling without you, the checkout asks for the traveller’s name, the traveller’s phone and an emergency contact. There is also an optional group leader phone field, useful when a sibling is travelling with them.
  • A second opinion before paying. The basket can email a secure review link, so another family member can check the times and addresses before one person pays.
  • Notes for the driver. Say if someone walks slowly or needs help with steps, and describe the meeting point at the hotel.

Many families also decide in advance who will stay with a tired child or grandparent at the hotel if the timing becomes tight. That is a family decision, but it is easier made on Tuesday than in the lobby on Friday morning.

What to carry for two days

A weekend trip rarely needs a large case, and travelling light makes the hotel door and the car quicker. Keep in a small bag per person:

  • identity documents and the permit in the Nusuk app, on a charged phone with a power bank
  • the hotel booking and both journey confirmations, also saved offline
  • medicines for the whole weekend
  • ihram clothing if anyone will need it, as advised by your scholar
  • water and something simple to eat on the road

Our guide to keeping essential travel details offline suggests what to keep on paper as well as on the phone.

Worked example: the Mansour family’s weekend from Riyadh

Omar Mansour works in Riyadh. He and his wife Layla want to take their two children, aged ten and seven, for a weekend Umrah. Layla’s sister Noor, who lives in Jeddah, will join them.

The plan. On Monday they book a Thursday evening flight from Riyadh to Jeddah and a Saturday evening flight back, and request permits in Nusuk. They read the Ministry’s answers about arriving after the permit time, then choose a Friday morning permit so that Thursday night is for rest.

The journeys. On Monday evening Layla books two journeys in the ride finder:

  • Jeddah Airport to their Makkah hotel on Thursday, with Noor’s home in Jeddah added as a stop. Five passengers, three adults and two children, with two large bags and five cabin bags. A four-seat car cannot take five, so the search offers the Staria and larger; they choose the Staria, which includes 30 minutes of free waiting. She adds 30 minutes of extra waiting, giving 60 minutes from the booked pickup time, because the Thursday flight is often late.
  • Their Makkah hotel to Jeddah Airport on Saturday afternoon, again via Noor’s home, timed well ahead of the flight.

Confirmation. Both requests read Confirmed by Tuesday. Layla sends Noor the pickup time and the driver’s details once the driver-assigned email arrives.

When the weekend plan moves

Short trips have little slack, so decide in advance what you will do if something shifts.

  • Flight retimed. Only the pickup time can be changed online, in your account and before the pickup time. An approved new time carries a £5 rescheduling fee, converted into the booking currency and added to the cash paid to the driver at pickup.
  • Anything else changes. The pickup place, destination, passengers and vehicle cannot be changed online; our guide to what you can change online and what needs the booking team explains the options.
  • Trip called off. Bookings are subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) if the customer cancels. If we or the transport partner cancel, or cannot supply the journey and no suitable alternative is accepted, you receive a full refund for the affected journey.

Because of the subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) rule, it is sensible to have the permit and flights settled before you pay for the journeys.

Checklist for a two-day Umrah weekend

  1. Choose the pattern: Thursday night to Saturday, Friday to Saturday, or Thursday to Friday.
  2. Request the Umrah permit in Nusuk and read the Ministry’s answers on permit times.
  3. Book flights first if you are flying from Riyadh or elsewhere.
  4. Confirm the hotel, its check-in and checkout times, and any late checkout.
  5. Work back from the permit time to set the outward pickup, with a margin.
  6. Add any second address or miqat as a stop in journey order.
  7. Enter every passenger, child seat and bag honestly.
  8. Add extra waiting for an evening airport pickup or a family checkout.
  9. Book both journeys by Tuesday in Saudi time, and pay.
  10. Wait until each status reads Confirmed.
  11. Share the pickup times and driver details with everyone travelling.

A weekend Umrah rewards early decisions: settle the permit, the flights and the hotel, then book the two journeys together so the weekend itself is calm. When your dates are fixed, open the Pilgrim Taxi ride finder, enter your outward and return journeys, and check the vehicles offered for your family.
