Umrah by road from the UAE is a realistic plan for families living in the Emirates, but it works best when you treat it as two separate problems: the long self-drive across the border into Saudi Arabia, and the journeys inside the Kingdom once you reach Makkah. Many families drive their own car to their Makkah hotel, then leave it parked and book a driver for the long Makkah to Madinah leg, the visits in between and the airport run for any relative flying home. This guide shows how to split the trip so the person at the wheel is not also doing every mile after arrival.
It is written for UAE residents and citizens, including expatriate families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern Emirates, who are thinking about driving to Makkah and Madinah rather than flying. It covers what official sources say about the border crossing, the documents and vehicle questions you must check with the authorities yourself, fatigue on a very long drive, the miqat on the eastern approach, and which parts of the trip Pilgrim Taxi can take over. Pilgrim Taxi operates inside Saudi Arabia only; we do not drive across the border. For religious questions, speak to a qualified scholar and read the official guidance in the Nusuk app.

Umrah by road from the UAE: what the journey involves
On official Saudi sources, the road link between the two countries runs through one crossing. Saudipedia’s page on Al-Batha Port describes it as a land port on the Kingdom’s eastern border, in al-Udayd Governorate in the Eastern Province, and the only port connecting Saudi Arabia with the United Arab Emirates. It lists three bodies working there under the Ministry of Interior’s oversight: the General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat), the General Directorate of Border Guard, and the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA).
After the border, the journey to Makkah crosses the Eastern Province and the centre of the country before reaching the Hijaz. It makes Umrah by road from the UAE one of the longest drives a family is likely to attempt. We do not quote a total distance from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, because our route checks start inside Saudi Arabia and we publish only figures we have measured. For any journey you want us to drive, type the exact pickup and destination into the ride finder and check the distance shown in the route summary.
Border documents and your car: check with the official bodies
This is the section where families most want a simple list, and where a travel article can do the most harm by guessing. Rules for passports, national ID cards, residence permits, visas, vehicle papers, insurance and customs change, and they differ for GCC citizens, UAE residents of other nationalities and visitors. We have not found an official page that sets out every requirement for a private car driving from the UAE into Saudi Arabia, so we do not list them here.
Instead, check each question with the body responsible for it:
| Question | Who to check with |
|---|---|
| Which travel document each person needs to enter Saudi Arabia (passport, GCC ID card, visa) | Saudi General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat) through the Ministry of Interior and Absher; the Saudi visa platform for anyone who needs a visa |
| Leaving the UAE, and documents for UAE residents | The UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and the UAE government portal |
| Taking your own car into Saudi Arabia, customs papers and any temporary entry | Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) |
| Motor insurance valid in Saudi Arabia for a UAE-registered car | Your UAE insurer, and the Saudi Insurance Authority |
| Whether your driving licence is valid for driving in Saudi Arabia | Saudi traffic services under the Ministry of Interior |
| Umrah permit for your chosen date and time | The Nusuk app |
Saudipedia’s summary of the driving rules says that anyone holding a valid driving licence recognised by the responsible authority in the Kingdom may drive there. Whether your particular licence is recognised is exactly the kind of detail to confirm before you set off, not at the border.
Keep printed and digital copies of every traveller’s documents, and check the whole party at once: one member with a different nationality or residence status can change what the car needs.
Pilgrims and the Al-Batha crossing
The Saudi Press Agency reported in 2024 that the Jawazat branch at the Al-Batha crossing received pilgrims arriving from the UAE, and that the directorate equips land crossings with technology and staff for pilgrims. That report concerns Hajj; for Umrah, check permits and entry rules for your own dates.
Driving to Umrah from Dubai: the fatigue question
Driving to Umrah from Dubai or Abu Dhabi usually means one adult, sometimes two, doing a very long stint behind the wheel, often after a working week. Families who do it well plan the drive around rest, not around the map.
Share the driving or break the journey
If two adults in the car can drive, agree who drives which part before you leave, and swap at planned stops rather than when someone is already struggling. If only one person can drive, plan at least one overnight stop in Saudi Arabia on the way to Makkah. Riyadh is the obvious place for many families, and King Khalid International Airport is one of the popular locations in our planner if a relative is flying in to join you there.
A night in Taif before the final leg is another option some families use. From the Makkah Clock Tower area to the Taif InterContinental is about 106 km on our live route checks, so the last day becomes short.
Arriving tired in Makkah
The risk is not only the drive in. A family that arrives in Makkah exhausted, then drives to Madinah a few days later, then drives all the way home, puts the same person under strain three times. That is where a booked driver makes the biggest difference, and the next sections explain how.
Our guide to long road journeys with toddlers between the cities has more on pacing a long day with young children in the car.
The miqat on the eastern approach
Families driving in from the Gulf approach Makkah from the east. The Saudi Press Agency describes the Al-Sayl Al-Kabeer route as a significant land route for pilgrims journeying to Makkah from Najd and the eastern Arabian Peninsula. It places the Al-Sayl Al-Kabeer Miqat Mosque on the right side of the Al-Sayl highway to Makkah, about 80 km from the Grand Mosque, with ablution facilities, water services and bus parking.
Which miqat applies to your family, when to enter ihram on a very long drive, and what to do if you stop overnight in Taif are religious questions. Ask a scholar you trust, and read the Nusuk guidance. Our Riyadh to Makkah by road guide covers the eastern approach in more detail, which is useful if your party breaks the journey in Riyadh.
Umrah by car from the Emirates: which journeys to hand over
Umrah by car from the Emirates does not have to mean driving every journey yourself. Once you are inside Saudi Arabia, the self-drive and a booked driver can share the work. This table sets out the common approaches.
| Approach | You drive | We can drive | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive everything | Border to Makkah, Makkah to Madinah, Madinah home | Nothing | Two confident drivers, small party, plenty of days |
| Park in Makkah | Border to Makkah and home again | Makkah to Madinah, Madinah back to Makkah, visits | One main driver who wants the middle of the trip off |
| Car stays in Madinah | Border to Makkah, Makkah to Madinah, home from Madinah | Visits in Makkah and Madinah, airport runs for relatives | Families who finish in Madinah and start home from there |
| Split party | One adult drives the car with luggage | Older relatives travel with us from an airport or between cities | Grandparents who should not spend days in a car |
Every journey we drive starts and ends inside Saudi Arabia and is booked separately with at least 48 hours’ notice.
Makkah to Madinah and back
The Makkah to Madinah road is about 439 km, a long day on top of the long drive you have already done. If your own car stays at the Makkah hotel, you would book two journeys: Makkah to your Madinah hotel, and Madinah back to your Makkah hotel on the day you leave. Hotel parking rules are for the hotel to confirm; ask them before you commit to leaving the car there for several days.
If your family wants to stop at the Dhul Hulayfah miqat on the way back into Makkah, our guide to the Madinah to Makkah journey with the miqat stop explains how to add it.
Visits in Makkah
Short outings are also journeys in the planner. From the Makkah Clock Tower to the Hira Cultural District is about 13 km, and to Masjid Aisha at Al-Taneem about 13 km. Driving and parking in central Makkah with children is harder than it looks, so many families leave the car where it is.
A relative flying in or out
Sometimes one person cannot take the whole road trip: a parent joins by air, or someone must return to work early. Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport to central Makkah is about 94 to 97 km on our route checks, and the Makkah Hilton Jabal Omar to Jeddah Airport about 91 km. Madinah Airport to the Madinah Hilton is about 20 km. Book each airport journey separately with the flight number at checkout.
Booking the journeys inside Saudi Arabia
Every Pilgrim Taxi journey is one pickup place and one destination, with up to eight stops in journey order. A there-and-back outing is two journeys, each with its own time.
- Pickup and destination. Type hotels by full name and branch, and check the pin on the map. Our guide to a Makkah hotel whose name and map pin disagree explains what to do if they do not match.
- Date and time. In Saudi local time, which is UTC+3. If your phone or calendar is still set to UAE time, check the time you enter against Saudi time before you pay.
- Passengers and bags. Count adults, children and infants, large bags and cabin bags. The search shows only vehicle classes that fit.
- Extras. Child seats and a wheelchair requirement can be added in the search.
- Notes. Describe the meeting point, for example the hotel lobby or a named side entrance.
Online bookings need at least 48 hours’ notice before pickup. Pilgrim Taxi takes full payment online, and payment secures a provisional request. The booking team updates the status within 1 to 12 hours, and the journey is booked only when it reads Confirmed. Each journey has a minimum booking value equivalent to £40. The page on how Pilgrim Taxi works shows the full checkout.
Waiting at a hotel door
Free waiting counts from the booked pickup time. Economy includes 15 minutes, then SAR 1.50 per minute. Business and Executive, the Staria VIP van and the H1 family van include 30 minutes, then SAR 2.00 per minute. Minibus and coach classes include 30 minutes, then SAR 2.50 per minute. The Premium SUV class includes 45 minutes, then SAR 2.50 per minute, and the Luxury class 60 minutes, then SAR 4.00 per minute.
A family checking out of a Makkah hotel with several days of luggage may want more. Extra waiting can be added at checkout in 15-minute steps up to two hours, at the class’s per-minute rate. Waiting beyond what was booked is never promised.
Vehicle size when your own car carries the luggage
A family driving from the Emirates often packs the car full. If you are handing the Makkah to Madinah leg to us, remember the booked vehicle must carry everyone and everything for that leg. If the bulk of the luggage stays in your parked car, you may need a smaller vehicle than you think.
| Class (example model, or similar) | Seats | Large bags |
|---|---|---|
| Economy (Camry class) | 4 | 2 (Camry 3) |
| Business and Executive | 4 | 3 |
| Hyundai Staria VIP van | 6 | 2 |
| Premium SUV (Tahoe) | 6 | 4 |
| GMC Yukon XL | 7 | 6 |
| Hyundai H1 family van | 7 | 6 |
| Toyota Hiace | 11 | 10 |
On our live capacity checks, four adults with four large cases are offered the Premium SUV class and larger only, and five adults with five cases are offered seven-seat vehicles and larger. Our guide to matching suitcases to the vehicle helps if you are unsure.
Worked example: the Farooqui family drive from Sharjah
Imran Farooqui lives in Sharjah with his wife Hina and their two children, aged nine and six. Hina’s father, Rashid, lives with them. The family plan Umrah during the school holiday and want to drive, partly because Rashid dislikes airports.
Checking the papers. Before booking anything, Imran checks entry requirements for each of the five travellers with the official Saudi and UAE bodies, confirms with his insurer what cover the car needs in Saudi Arabia, and checks the Nusuk app for permit availability. Rashid’s residence status differs from the rest of the family, so Imran checks his case separately.
Splitting the drive. Imran is the only driver. He plans a night in Riyadh on the way, and the family ask their imam about the miqat and ihram for this plan.
Handing over the middle. In Makkah the car stays at the hotel, after Imran confirms parking with the hotel. He books three journeys through the ride finder, all more than 48 hours ahead:
- Makkah Clock Tower area hotel to the Hira Cultural District and a separate journey back, for a morning visit.
- Makkah hotel to their Madinah hotel, in a Premium SUV for five people and four cases, with 30 minutes of extra waiting at pickup so Rashid is not rushed, giving 75 minutes from the booked time, 45 free and 30 paid.
- Madinah hotel back to the Makkah hotel on their last morning, with the Dhul Hulayfah miqat as a stop, following their imam’s advice.
The drive home. Imran leaves Makkah rested, because he has not driven since the day they arrived. He waits for each booking to read Confirmed and shares the driver’s details with Hina.
Changes, cancellation and the drive not going to plan
Long drives slip. A family delayed at the border or on the road may reach Makkah a day late, which moves every journey after it.
- Time changes. Only the pickup time can be changed online, in your account and before the pickup time. An approved new time carries a £5 rescheduling fee, converted into the booking currency and added to the cash paid to the driver at pickup. The pickup place, destination, passengers and vehicle cannot be changed online.
- Cancellation. Bookings are subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) if the customer cancels. If we or the transport partner cancel, or cannot supply the journey and no suitable alternative is accepted, you receive a full refund for the affected journey. The full cancellation and refund policy sets this out.
- Status. Our guide to provisional, confirmed and pending request statuses explains what each one means.
Because of the subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) rule, many road-trip families book only the journeys inside Saudi Arabia that are fixed by hotel dates, and book short visits once they know how the drive went, still keeping 48 hours’ notice.
