Going from Jeddah Airport to Madinah by road means one private journey from King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) to your Madinah hotel, booked in advance, with a live route check in our booking system of about 397 km from the airport to the Madinah Hilton. It is a long first day, so the decisions that matter are the pickup time you book, the vehicle size for your party and bags, how much waiting you allow for immigration and baggage, and what the family will need during the drive. The alternative is the Haramain High Speed Railway, which has a station at the airport, followed by a short onward transfer in Madinah.

This guide is for the family organiser, often booking from abroad for parents or older relatives, who has chosen (or is considering) a trip that lands in Jeddah but begins in Madinah. It explains why families choose this order, how the road option compares with the train from the airport station, how to set the pickup time and waiting, what to write in the booking notes, and what happens on arrival at the Madinah hotel. A worked example and a checklist close the guide.

Four-step diagram: land at KAIA and note the terminal; set the pickup time plus waiting; about 397 km by road; drop-off at the Madinah hotel.

Umrah starting in Madinah from Jeddah: why families choose it

An Umrah starting in Madinah from Jeddah is a common pattern when the cheapest or most convenient flight lands in Jeddah but the family wants to spend the first days in Madinah and travel to Makkah later. Some prefer to settle in Madinah before the busier days in Makkah; others simply have hotel dates that fit that order.

The transport cost of this choice is clear: the long road leg falls on arrival day, when everyone is tired. Our guide to planning ground transport before flights are booked sets out all five common airport patterns side by side.

A note on worship: questions about where and when to enter ihram when you later travel from Madinah to Makkah are matters for a qualified scholar and the official guidance on Nusuk, the official platform where pilgrims request Umrah permits and book appointments to visit the Rawdah at the Prophet’s Mosque. We do not give rulings; we only help with the journeys.

What a Jeddah Airport to Madinah by road journey involves

A Pilgrim Taxi journey has one pickup place, one destination, a pickup date and time in Saudi local time (UTC+3), the passengers (adults, children and infants), large bags and cabin bags. For this trip:

  • Pickup place: Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport. It appears in the ride finder’s popular locations.
  • Destination: your Madinah hotel. The Madinah Hilton is a listed location; any other hotel is typed and must be checked in the route summary.
  • Distance: our live check from Jeddah Airport to the Madinah Hilton was about 397 km. A different hotel will give a slightly different figure, so read the route summary for your own search.
  • Notice: check the pickup dates and times accepted by the booking form before finalising your plans.

We do not quote journey times, because they vary too much with traffic, season and stops.

Which terminal you land at

KAIA’s official overview describes Terminal 1 as the main hub for international and domestic flights, alongside the North Terminal and the Hajj and Umrah Complex. The airport also announced in January 2026 that Terminal 4 is dedicated to international low-cost carriers. Your airline or ticket will show which terminal you use. Put that terminal, and the flight number, in the booking so the pickup is planned for the right building.

Road or Haramain train from the airport station?

KAIA has its own Haramain High Speed Railway station. The operator’s HHR airport station page describes it as an integrated structure within the main airport terminal building, open daily from 06:30 to 00:30, and HHR lists the line’s stations as Makkah, Jeddah, KAIA, King Abdullah Economic City and Madinah.

So the real choice on arrival day is between travelling from Jeddah Airport to Madinah by road, door to door, and a sequence of airport, train and onward taxi. The table sets out the practical differences.

Question Private road transfer Train from the airport station
Number of stages One: airport to hotel door Three: walk to the station, train, onward transfer from Madinah station to the hotel
Luggage Limited by vehicle class; the ride finder only shows vehicles that fit your party and bags HHR allows one large piece per passenger up to 25 kg and 65 x 55 x 35 cm, plus one hand item (baggage rules)
Late-night landings Pickup can be booked for any time Station hours are published as 06:30 to 00:30
Delayed flight You add waiting at checkout and can request a new pickup time A missed train is handled under HHR’s own ticket terms
Older or less mobile travellers Stay seated from kerb to hotel; wheelchair requirement can be added in the search Several walks with bags between the stages
Children Infant seat, child seat or booster can be added in the search Check HHR’s own rules for children before buying tickets
Booking Book online; review the available options and your booking status. Book with HHR; check the timetable on the official site

The train suits confident adults who pack light and land during station hours. The road suits families with several large cases, children, older parents, a wheelchair, or a landing outside station hours. Often the luggage rule alone decides it: two suitcases each will not meet a one-large-piece limit.

If you choose the train, you still need a short transfer from Madinah station to the hotel. That is a separate Pilgrim Taxi journey, booked with its own pickup time after the scheduled train arrival.

Planning the long drive from Jeddah Airport to Madinah

The long drive from Jeddah Airport to Madinah is a different kind of day from the short run to Makkah. A few decisions before booking make it calmer.

Choose the vehicle for comfort, not just capacity

The ride finder only shows vehicle classes that pass the capacity check for your passengers and luggage. On a short city transfer, the smallest class that fits is usually fine. On a long road day, some families move up one class so that nobody sits with a bag on their lap.

Find a ride

Use your actual passenger and bag counts in the live search; the offered vehicles depend on that journey. For shared luggage, see our guide to one shared suitcase for two travellers.

Keep a day bag in the cabin

Everything the family needs during the drive should be in a small bag inside the car, not in a case in the boot: medication, water, a phone charger, snacks for children, a light layer for air conditioning, and any documents needed at the hotel. Our note on which bag stays with the traveller has a short list for long journeys.

Breaks during the journey

If the family will want a short comfort break, say so in the booking notes and the booking team can tell you what is possible. Do not assume a particular stopping place. Stops added in the ride finder are real addresses in journey order, for collecting or dropping someone.

Setting the pickup time and waiting at the airport

Allow time for immigration and baggage collection when choosing your pickup. Check the included waiting period and when it starts in the terms shown for your journey.

Check the waiting terms

Review the included waiting time and any extra waiting charge shown for your selected vehicle at checkout. The terms confirmed for your booking apply.

Adding extra waiting at checkout

Immigration and baggage collection can take time. If extra waiting is offered at checkout, review its duration and cost before adding it, and keep the confirmed pickup instructions with your travel details.

Give the flight number at checkout; the system asks for it on airport journeys. Our guide to the flight number or the booking reference explains which code to use when the ticket shows several. If your trip involves a connection, make sure you book against the final flight into Jeddah; the guide on finding the final arrival in a connecting itinerary shows how.

Overnight arrivals

Many flights from Europe and Asia land in the early hours. Check the date carefully: a flight that leaves on the evening of the 10th and lands after midnight arrives on the 11th, and the pickup is on the 11th. Our guide to overnight flights and the pickup date goes through this step by step. For a long road day that begins at 03:00, it is worth telling the hotel in Madinah that the family will arrive early and asking about early check-in; only the hotel can answer that.

Arriving at the Madinah hotel

The journey ends at the hotel address you entered. Two things decide how smooth that last stretch is.

The exact address. Many Madinah hotels have similar names, and some groups have more than one property. Check the route summary before paying, and compare the map with the hotel’s own booking confirmation. Our guide on a hotel name and map pin that disagree covers what to do when they do not match.

The drop-off point. We do not promise where a car may stop outside a particular hotel; that is managed on the day. If the hotel has a specific entrance for luggage or vehicles, describe it in the booking notes, and keep a phone ready to share a live location with the driver if the building is hard to find.

Some families arriving this way also plan a short Madinah programme for the following days. Our Madinah-first planning page brings together the usual next steps, including the later journey to Makkah.

What to write in the booking notes

The booking notes are read by the booking team and passed to the driver. For this transfer, useful notes are short and practical:

  • The terminal shown on the ticket and the flight number (the flight number also goes in its own field).
  • The number of large cases and any unusual items, such as a folding wheelchair or a pushchair.
  • Any mobility need, described practically (“my mother walks slowly and cannot carry bags”), without private medical history.
  • A request for a comfort break if the family will need one.
  • The hotel name as written on the hotel confirmation, and any entrance the hotel has told you to use.
  • The traveller’s phone, if you are booking for someone else. The checkout requires the traveller’s name, the traveller’s phone and an emergency contact when the booking is not for you.

Our guide to describing practical assistance in booking notes shows how to word mobility needs clearly.

Booking rules that apply to this journey

  • Pickup time: choose a date and time accepted by the current booking form.
  • Payment: review the available payment options and the amount shown at checkout.
  • Journey price: check the complete total, journey details and any extras before payment.
  • Changes: view the options offered for your booking in your account, or contact support.
  • Booking status: check your account for the current status and confirmed journey details.
  • Cancellation: review the terms shown for your booking and the cancellation and refund policy.

Confirm the flight, hotel and party size before you pay, and if the flight time moves, request a new pickup time rather than cancelling.

Worked example: the Rahman family land in Jeddah and start in Madinah

Nadia Rahman lives in Leicester and is organising Umrah for her parents, Karim and Shireen, and her aunt Farida. They fly into Jeddah, land at 01:40 Saudi time on a Tuesday, and have four nights booked at a hotel in Madinah before moving to Makkah.

The road or the train? They land outside the airport station’s published hours, and each of them has one large case plus a second bag of gifts. Karim uses a walking stick. Nadia chooses the road.

The vehicle. Nadia enters three adults and four large cases, then chooses a vehicle offered for that party, luggage and travel date. She checks the waiting terms before payment.

The pickup time. Nadia keeps the flight arrival and booked pickup time distinct. She allows for immigration and baggage collection and reviews any extra waiting offered at checkout.

The details. At checkout she enters her own mobile as the customer, Karim as the traveller with his Saudi SIM number, and her brother in Birmingham as the emergency contact. The flight number goes in its field. In the notes she writes the terminal from the ticket, “father walks with a stick, please help with cases”, “may need one short comfort break”, and the hotel name exactly as it appears on the hotel confirmation.

Booking and confirmation. She books nine days ahead, pays in pounds, and the status reads Confirmed the same afternoon. She sends her parents one message with the pickup time, driver details once assigned and the hotel address, plus a paper copy for Karim.

On the day. If the flight time changes, Nadia checks the confirmed pickup instructions and contact options for the booking. She has already asked the hotel about early check-in.

Checklist before you book

  1. Confirm the flight lands in Jeddah, note the terminal on the ticket, and write down the final flight number.
  2. Work out the arrival date in Saudi local time (UTC+3), especially for overnight flights.
  3. Decide between the road and the train, using luggage, landing time and mobility as the main tests.
  4. Count passengers (adults, children, infants) and every large case and cabin bag.
  5. Choose a vehicle class that fits comfortably for a long day, not just one that fits.
  6. Set the pickup time after the landing time, then add extra waiting at checkout if immigration and reclaim may be slow.
  7. Add child seats or a wheelchair requirement in the search if needed.
  8. Check the Madinah hotel address in the route summary against the hotel’s confirmation.
  9. Write practical booking notes: terminal, bags, mobility, comfort break, hotel entrance.
  10. Review the payment options and terms, complete the booking steps, then check the status in your account.
  11. Send the travellers one clear message and keep an offline copy of the details.

Plan your Jeddah Airport to Madinah journey

Travelling from Jeddah Airport to Madinah by road is the simplest way to go from the aircraft to the hotel door in one stage, as long as the pickup time, waiting and vehicle suit the whole family. Enter King Abdulaziz International Airport and your Madinah hotel in the Pilgrim Taxi ride finder to see the vehicles that fit your party and luggage, check the route summary, and choose an accepted pickup date and review the available payment options before booking.
