Put this leg in place
Makkah hotel early check-in is never automatic. If your flight lands in Jeddah in the early morning, you may reach your Makkah hotel hours before the check-in time printed on your reservation, and whether a room is ready then is for the hotel to decide. The reliable ways to close the gap are to ask the hotel in writing before you travel, to reserve the room from the previous night if you need it on arrival, or to plan where the family will wait and what happens to the luggage in the meantime. The transfer itself should still be booked for the time your plane lands.
This guide is for families flying into Jeddah or Madinah on early-morning or overnight flights, and for the relative at home who books their hotel and transport. It explains what Saudi tourism rules say about check-in and check-out times, the options for the gap and how they compare, how to time the airport pickup, what to carry in the car, the question of going straight to Umrah on arrival, and a worked example. It does not give religious rulings; for those, ask a qualified scholar and check the current guidance in the Nusuk app.

Why arriving before hotel check-in time is so common
Overnight flights are a common way to reach Saudi Arabia for Umrah, and a family that leaves home in the evening can be through immigration at Jeddah before dawn. From King Abdulaziz International Airport to central Makkah is about 94 to 97 km by road on our live route checks, so even with a relaxed start the family can reach the hotel well before most rooms would normally be released.
Meanwhile the hotel reservation is built around nights. Arriving before hotel check-in time is not a mistake in the booking; it is simply where a night-based hotel stay meets a morning flight. Our guide to the difference between your travel day and your hotel night explains how to keep the pickup date and the hotel date straight. This article is about what the family actually does between landing and getting a room.
What the rules say about check-in times in Saudi Arabia
Saudi tourism regulation does not fix a national check-in time. The Ministry of Tourism’s guide to rights and guidelines for staying in tourism accommodation says the regulations emphasise a clear check-in and check-out process but do not specify fixed times, and that the minimum occupancy time on the day of check-in and check-out must not be less than 20 hours. Facilities must state their times in their policies, and guests should check them before booking.
The Saudi Press Agency’s report of the ministry’s clarification of the 20-hour policy adds two points that matter for an early arrival:
- Hotels can set their own schedules to suit their location and guests, as long as the 20 hours between check-in and check-out are guaranteed and both times are shown in the reservation document.
- A guest’s late arrival does not change the check-out time listed in the reservation.
What follows for your family:
- The check-in time is whatever your reservation says. Read it on the confirmation, not on a booking website’s general page.
- Nothing in the rule entitles you to an early room. An early room is something the hotel may offer, not something it must.
- The rule works in your favour on the last day. Because the stay must cover at least 20 hours on the day of check-in and check-out, you can see exactly when you must leave, which helps you plan the next journey.
For questions or complaints about a hotel’s compliance, the same Ministry of Tourism guide gives the Unified Tourism Call Center on 930.
Makkah hotel early check-in: the options compared
There are four realistic ways to handle the gap. None is right for every family, and some families combine two.
| Option | How it works | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reserve from the night before | The room is booked from the previous night so it is yours on arrival | Older parents, young children, anyone who needs to lie down straight away | You pay for a night you do not sleep through |
| Ask for early check-in | You request an early room in writing; the hotel decides on the day | Families who can wait if the answer is no | No certainty until you arrive |
| Leave luggage and wait | You ask the hotel whether it can hold bags until the room is ready | Fit adults happy to rest in a lobby or go out | Depends on the hotel; bags out of reach for hours |
| Rest elsewhere first | The family waits somewhere else and travels to the hotel nearer check-in | Rare; only when a comfortable alternative exists | A second journey, and more moving of bags |
Reserve from the night before
This is the only option that turns a hoped-for Makkah hotel early check-in into a certainty, because the room is already yours. Ask the hotel, or the agent who booked it, to start the reservation one night earlier and confirm in writing that the room will be held for an early-morning arrival. For a family with elderly parents who have been travelling all night, many organisers find the extra night is the best money spent on the trip.
Ask for early check-in
Email or message the hotel directly, not only the booking website, with the arrival time in Saudi local time and the number of people. Ask two things: whether an early room is possible, and what happens if it is not. Keep the reply. A hotel may say it will try but cannot promise, which is honest and useful. Plan as if the answer on the day could be no.
Leave luggage and wait
Many travellers assume a hotel will hold their bags. Some do, some have limits, and some are very busy at peak times. Ask the hotel whether it can keep luggage before check-in and for how many cases. We do not offer luggage storage, and the driver cannot hold bags for you after drop-off.
Rest elsewhere first
Occasionally a family has a relative or friend in Makkah or Jeddah and prefers to rest there first. If so, that is a separate journey with its own pickup time. The transfer from the airport goes to the first address, and a second journey takes the family to the hotel later. Each needs booking at least 48 hours ahead.
Umrah arrival before check-in: the question to settle first
For many families the gap raises a bigger question. If the party entered ihram before or during the flight, do they go to the Haram for Umrah as soon as they arrive, or rest first? That is a religious and personal question, and we do not answer it. Speak to a qualified scholar before you travel, and read the official guidance in Nusuk.
What we can say is that the answer changes the transport and hotel plan completely, which is why it should be settled before anything is booked.
- If the family plan to perform Umrah on arrival, the hotel becomes a place to leave bags and perhaps wash, not a place to sleep straight away. Whether the hotel can hold bags matters more than whether a room is ready.
- If the family plan to rest first, a room on arrival matters most, and reserving from the night before becomes more attractive.
Also check the practical requirements for Umrah itself. The Saudi Press Agency describes the Nusuk app as the place to request Umrah permits, which are approved by the authorities. Check the permit arrangements for your dates in Nusuk before you plan an Umrah arrival before check-in.
Timing the airport pickup when the room is not ready
It can be tempting to push the pickup later so the family arrives nearer check-in. In practice that usually means sitting in an airport arrivals area after an overnight flight, which is rarely easier than sitting in a hotel lobby. Book the pickup for the time your final flight is scheduled to land, in Saudi local time, and use the hotel plan to handle the gap.
If your itinerary has a connection, only the last flight into Jeddah or Madinah matters. Our guide to finding the final arrival in a connecting itinerary shows how to pick out that line, and our note on giving a flight number rather than a booking reference explains what the checkout asks for.
Waiting at the airport
Free waiting counts from the booked pickup time, not from the moment the plane lands or the car arrives. That matters at an airport, where immigration and baggage reclaim can take a long time.
| Vehicle class | Free waiting from booked pickup time | Rate after that |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 15 minutes | SAR 1.50 per minute |
| Business and Executive, Staria VIP van, H1 family van | 30 minutes | SAR 2.00 per minute |
| Hiace, Coaster, Coach | 30 minutes | SAR 2.50 per minute |
| Premium SUV (Tahoe or Yukon) | 45 minutes | SAR 2.50 per minute |
| Luxury (S-Class) | 60 minutes | SAR 4.00 per minute |
Extra waiting can be added at checkout in 15-minute steps up to two hours (15, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes), priced at the class’s per-minute rate. The driver’s instructions then show the total from the booked pickup time. For a family with several cases arriving on a busy morning, adding extra waiting is usually wiser than hoping immigration will be quick. We never promise waiting beyond what was booked.
Arriving in Madinah before check-in time
The same gap appears for families who begin in Madinah. Madinah Airport to the Madinah Hilton is about 20 km on our route checks, so an early arrival can reach a central hotel very early indeed. The same Ministry of Tourism rules apply to hotels in Madinah, and the same four options are open. Our page on beginning your plan in Madinah covers the rest of a Madinah-first trip.
For families going straight from Madinah Airport to Makkah, the gap is usually smaller: Madinah Airport to the Clock Tower area of Makkah is about 460 km on our live route checks, so the family arrives in Makkah much later in the day. Check the hotel’s check-in time against your plan anyway.
What to carry in the car when the room is not ready
When the room may not be ready, the family’s cabin bags do more work than usual. Anything you might need in the hours before check-in should be in a bag that stays with you, not in a suitcase that may disappear into a hotel store. Our article on deciding which bag stays with the traveller goes into detail. For this situation, a small bag per person usually holds:
- medicines for the next 24 hours, clearly labelled
- a change of clothes and basic toiletries
- phone, charger and a power bank
- water and something simple to eat
- the hotel’s written reply about early check-in or luggage
- passports, visas and a charged phone with the Nusuk app
Parents travelling with babies or toddlers will want nappies, milk and a change of clothes for the child within reach too.
Worked example: the Begum family land at dawn
Nasreen Begum is organising Umrah from Birmingham for her parents, Abdul and Shamima, who are in their seventies, and her aunt Rehana. The three are flying overnight and land at King Abdulaziz International Airport at 05:10 Saudi time. Their Makkah hotel shows check-in from 16:00 on the reservation.
The questions Nasreen settles first:
- Umrah on arrival or rest first? Her parents have spoken to their imam and decided to rest first, because of their age and the overnight flight.
- So what matters most? A room soon after arrival.
Hotel. Nasreen emails the hotel to ask about early check-in. The reply says an early room is possible on some days but cannot be promised. She decides her parents should not sit in a lobby for ten hours, so she asks for the reservation to start the night before and gets written confirmation that the room will be held for an arrival around 07:00 to 08:00.
Transfer. She books a Business and Executive car, which takes four passengers and three large bags; the party has three cases. The pickup is the landing time, 05:10, on the landing date. She adds 30 minutes of extra waiting, so the driver’s instructions show 60 minutes from the booked pickup time. She books more than 48 hours ahead, pays in full online and waits for the status to read Confirmed.
Contacts. Nasreen is the customer. Her father is the named traveller, with his roaming tested, and her aunt’s number goes in the optional group leader phone field as a backup. Our guide to one organiser and one travelling contact helped her decide who went where.
On the day. Immigration is slow, and the three reach the arrivals area 47 minutes after the booked time, within their 60 minutes. They are in their room shortly after arriving at the hotel, and sleep until Dhuhr.
If you are changing hotels on arrival day
Some families spend the first night near the airport or in another hotel and move to Makkah the next day. Each move is its own journey with its own pickup time, and the same check-in question applies at each hotel. If a hotel’s name is shared by several branches, check the address carefully; our guide to a hotel change within the same brand explains the risk.
Booking points to keep in mind
- Notice. Online bookings need at least 48 hours’ notice before pickup.
- Payment and status. Pilgrim Taxi takes full payment online. Payment secures a provisional request, the status should update within 1 to 12 hours, and the journey is booked only when it reads Confirmed.
- Time changes. If the flight time changes, request a new pickup time in your account before the pickup time. An approved change carries a £5 rescheduling fee, converted into the booking currency and added to the cash paid to the driver at pickup. The place, destination, passengers and vehicle cannot be changed online.
- Cancellation. Bookings are subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) if the customer cancels. If we or the transport partner cancel, or cannot supply the journey, you receive a full refund for the affected journey.
- Minimum value. Each journey has a minimum booking value equivalent to £40.
- Stopping at the hotel. We cannot promise where a car may stop outside a Makkah hotel; that is managed on the day. Agree a meeting point and share a live location.
Checklist for arriving before hotel check-in time
- Read the check-in and check-out times on the hotel reservation itself.
- Decide, with a scholar’s advice where needed, whether the family will perform Umrah on arrival or rest first.
- Email the hotel about early check-in and ask what happens if no room is ready.
- Ask the hotel whether it can hold luggage before check-in, and for how many cases.
- If a room on arrival is essential, reserve from the previous night and get it confirmed in writing.
- Book the airport pickup for the final flight’s landing time, in Saudi local time.
- Add extra waiting if immigration and baggage are likely to be slow.
- Pack a cabin bag per person for the hours before check-in.
- Check the permit arrangements for your dates in Nusuk.
- Pay at least 48 hours ahead and wait for Confirmed.
- Share the hotel’s written reply and the driver details with the travellers.
A Makkah hotel early check-in cannot be guaranteed by a transfer booking, but a family who has settled the hotel plan first can arrive at any hour calmly. When you have your flight and hotel details, open the Pilgrim Taxi ride finder, enter the airport and your Makkah hotel with the landing time, and choose a vehicle and extra waiting that suit your family.
