Put this leg in place
A Makkah to Jeddah Airport taxi is a pre-booked private journey from your Makkah hotel to King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), and our live route check from the Hilton Hotel & Convention Jabal Omar to the airport came to about 91 km. Book it at least 48 hours ahead as its own journey, set the pickup time by working back from your airline’s check-in deadline rather than from the hotel checkout time, and give the booking the flight number and terminal. If relatives are on different flights, each departure time usually needs its own booking.
This guide is for the family organiser, often at home while parents or relatives finish their trip in Makkah, and for travellers arranging their own departure. It covers leaving Makkah for your flight, the gap between hotel checkout and pickup, choosing the terminal, the Haramain train as an alternative, waiting at a busy hotel frontage, families on different flights, and the booking rules that apply. It ends with the story of one family leaving on two different flights, followed by a pre-booking checklist.

Leaving Makkah for your flight: what the day involves
Leaving Makkah for your flight is usually the shortest intercity drive of an Umrah trip, but it is the one with the least room for error. The flight will not wait, the hotel frontage near the Haram can be busy, and the family often wants to fit in a last visit to the Masjid al-Haram before going.
Compared with the drive from Madinah, the road to Jeddah Airport is short. Our live checks give these distances:
| Route (live check) | Road distance (about) |
|---|---|
| Hilton Jabal Omar to Jeddah Airport | 91 km |
| Jeddah Airport to central Makkah (arrival direction) | 94 to 97 km |
| Makkah Clock Tower to Hilton Jabal Omar | 1.5 km |
Road distances differ by direction because of one-way systems and junctions, so the figure for your own hotel will be slightly different. Read it in the route summary before paying. Journey times are something we deliberately do not publish: Makkah traffic changes so much from one day to the next that any figure would mislead.
Any question about a farewell tawaf, its timing or its order in relation to your departure is a religious matter. Please ask a qualified scholar and follow the official guidance on Nusuk, the official platform where pilgrims request Umrah permits. This guide deals only with the transport around it.
Makkah to Jeddah Airport taxi: what to enter in the ride finder
Each booking holds a single route: where the car collects you, where it drops you, the pickup date and clock time in Saudi Arabia (UTC+3), and who and what is travelling, counted as adults, children, infants, suitcases and hand luggage. For a Makkah to Jeddah Airport taxi:
- Pickup: your Makkah hotel. The Clock Royal Tower / Fairmont and the Hilton Hotel & Convention Jabal Omar are listed locations. Any other hotel is typed, and the result must be checked in the route summary.
- Destination: Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport.
- Date and time: the pickup, not the flight. Night departures are where dates go wrong; read why overnight flights catch families out before you choose the day.
- Passengers and bags: as they will be on the day you leave, including anything bought during the trip.
Several Makkah hotels share a brand name across different buildings. If your hotel is one of them, compare the map pin with the hotel’s own confirmation. Our guide to two Makkah hotels with the same name shows how a wrong-branch pickup happens and how to avoid it.
Choosing the terminal at KAIA
Jeddah’s airport has more than one passenger building. Its official overview names Terminal 1, which it calls the main hub for both international and domestic flights, then the North Terminal and the Hajj and Umrah Complex. A press release from January 2026 added a fourth: Terminal 4, set aside for budget airlines on international routes.
Do not guess the terminal from the airline’s name or from a friend’s last trip. Check your ticket or the airline’s own confirmation, then:
- put the flight number in the flight number field at checkout;
- write the terminal in the booking notes;
- tell the travellers the terminal in writing, so they can confirm it with the driver.
If an airline moves your flight to a different terminal after booking, send the change to the booking team. If it moves the flight to a different airport altogether, the destination changes and that cannot be edited online; our guide to a flight moved to another airport covers what to do.
Working back from the flight
The pickup time comes from the flight, not from the hotel. Fill in this table from the bottom up, starting with the departure.
| Order | What to pin down | Where the answer comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Getting everyone and every case out of the rooms, paying the hotel, boarding the car | Your own estimate, then add some |
| 4 | The drive from the hotel to the terminal kerb | No fixed figure: traffic out of central Makkah changes daily, so allow far more than 91 km suggests |
| 3 | Queues, trolleys, a wheelchair request, children | Your knowledge of the party |
| 2 | The deadline for checking in and dropping bags | Only the airline: its website or your e-ticket |
| 1 | Departure time in Saudi local time | The ticket |
Subtract rows 2 to 5 from row 1 and you have the pickup time. Organisers planning from abroad tend to shave row 4, because 91 km sounds like nothing. On departure day, the cost of being early is a longer wait at the airport; the cost of being late is a missed flight.
Makkah hotel checkout to the airport: bridging the gap
The time from Makkah hotel checkout to the airport pickup is rarely zero. Hotels set their own checkout times and decide on any late checkout, so ask the hotel directly and in advance. Some families simply leave at checkout time and wait at the airport. Others book a late checkout, or keep one room for the afternoon. There is no bag-holding service from us, so any plan for the cases in those hours has to come from the hotel.
If the family wants a last visit to the Haram before leaving, plan it with its own margin before the pickup time and make sure one person is watching the clock. The driver’s clock starts at the booked time, and the free minutes run from there, whether or not the family is back yet.
Waiting at the hotel frontage
Free waiting is counted from the booked pickup time and depends on the class: 15 minutes in Economy, then SAR 1.50 a minute; 30 minutes for Business & Executive, the Staria and the H1, then SAR 2.00 a minute; 30 minutes for the Hiace, Coaster and Coach, then SAR 2.50; 45 minutes for the Premium SUV (Tahoe or Yukon), then SAR 2.50; and 60 minutes for the Luxury S-Class, then SAR 4.00 a minute.
Paid extra waiting can be bought at checkout, in quarter-hour blocks up to two hours. For a flight, though, each extra minute at the hotel is a minute lost at the airport. The stronger plan is a pickup time every traveller can genuinely meet, with the cases already downstairs.
Where a car may stop outside a hotel near the Haram is managed on the day; we do not promise a particular entrance or kerb. Agree the meeting point with the driver by phone, and send a live location if the frontage is crowded. Our guide to when the hotel name and map pin disagree helps if the building has more than one entrance or address.
Choosing the vehicle for a Makkah to Jeddah Airport taxi
The ride finder hides any class too small for the people and suitcases you type in. Type the departure-day numbers: gifts, dates and prayer mats bought in Makkah tend to add a case or two.
| Vehicle class (example, or similar) | Seats | Large bags | Typical departure party |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy (Toyota Camry class) | 4 | 2 | Two travellers, one case each |
| Business & Executive | 4 | 3 | Two or three adults, three cases |
| Premium SUV (Chevrolet Tahoe) | 6 | 4 | Four adults, four cases |
| Hyundai H1 (family van) | 7 | 6 | Five adults, five or six cases |
| Toyota Hiace | 11 | 10 | Extended family or small group |
In our own test searches, four adults travelling with four big suitcases saw nothing smaller than an SUV, and five adults with five suitcases were shown only seven-seaters and up. A box of Zamzam water fills the boot like a suitcase, so enter it as one. Whether your airline takes it, and in what packaging, is the airline’s decision, so read its rules first.
If you need an infant seat, a child seat, a booster or space for a wheelchair, tick it in the search so it is confirmed with the vehicle. Keep medication, passports, tickets, a charger and water in one small bag that stays in the car with the traveller, not in the boot. Our note on the day bag that stays with the traveller has a short list.
Haramain train from Makkah to the airport station
The Haramain High Speed Railway runs from Makkah through Jeddah to a station at KAIA, then on to King Abdullah Economic City and Madinah. The operator’s own figures give Makkah to Jeddah as 77 km and Jeddah to KAIA as a further 17 km along the line (about HHR). KAIA describes its station as linking passengers directly to Makkah and Madinah.
In practice the train turns one departure into three: a short ride from the hotel to Makkah station, the train itself, and then the walk from the airport station to your check-in desk. The rail operator places the airport station inside the main terminal building, so if your airline uses another building, find out from the airport how you would get there with your bags.
The rail operator also limits how much each passenger may bring, broadly one large case and one small bag each, and publishes its own timetable. Read both on its site before choosing this option.
| The train tends to suit | The road tends to suit |
|---|---|
| Two or three adults with one case each | Families with several cases, gifts or Zamzam |
| A daytime flight comfortably inside the timetable | A flight at night or very early |
| Travellers happy to walk and lift bags at each change | Older relatives, a wheelchair user, small children |
| Flights from the main terminal building | Flights from the North Terminal, Terminal 4 or the Hajj and Umrah Complex |
If you do take the train, the hop from the hotel to Makkah station is a short journey you can book with us separately, with its own pickup time.
Families on different flights
It is common for one family to leave Makkah on two or three different flights, sometimes on the same day. Because each journey has one pickup time, travellers leaving at very different times normally need separate bookings, each with its own passengers and bags.
| Situation | Usual approach |
|---|---|
| Same flight, whole family | One booking, vehicle sized for everyone and every bag |
| Two flights a few hours apart, same terminal | Often two bookings; decide whether the earlier group can wait at the airport for the later one |
| Two flights on different days | Two separate bookings |
| One traveller leaves early for work | A small booking for that person, the rest travel later |
Sharing one car to save money can mean the later travellers sit at the airport for many hours, which is hard on older relatives. Our article on relatives staying together but flying separately weighs one pickup against separate transfers, and our note on one traveller leaving before the rest covers the single early departure.
When some relatives leave from Madinah instead, the distances change completely; see a group splitting between Jeddah and Madinah departures.
Booking rules for the departure
| Rule | What it means on departure day |
|---|---|
| 48 hours’ notice | The ride finder refuses searches closer than that, so book early, not at the limit |
| Payment in full online | Paying creates a provisional request, not a booking |
| Status within 1 to 12 hours | Do not treat the car as booked until the account says Confirmed |
| Minimum value | Every journey carries a floor equivalent to £40 |
| Time is the only online change | Use “Request a new pickup time”; if approved, £5 (in the booking currency) is added to the cash handed to the driver, and a refused request costs nothing |
| Hotel, airport, passengers, vehicle | Fixed online: contact the booking team, or make a new booking and request cancellation of the old one |
| You cancel | Full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept |
| We or the partner cannot run it | Full refund if no suitable alternative is accepted (cancellation and refund policy) |
Worked example: the Malik family leave Makkah on two flights
Imran Malik in Glasgow is organising the return of his parents, Bashir and Rukhsana, and his two younger brothers, Adil and Hamza. All four are staying at a hotel near the Haram. The parents fly home on Sunday at 23:55. Adil and Hamza must be back at work sooner and fly on Saturday at 14:10.
Two bookings. Imran books two separate journeys from the hotel to Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport: one on Saturday for the brothers, one on Sunday evening for the parents.
Terminals. He checks both tickets. The flights use different airlines, so he confirms the terminal for each from the airline’s own booking page and writes it in each booking’s notes.
Vehicles. The brothers have two large cases and two cabin bags; the ride finder offers Economy and larger, and he picks Economy. The parents have three large cases, a carton of Zamzam that their airline allows, and Bashir uses a folding wheelchair at airports. Imran enters four large bags, adds the wheelchair requirement, and picks a Premium SUV.
Pickup times. Using the five-row table for each flight, with plenty of slack in the road row, he sets the brothers’ pickup late on Saturday morning and the parents’ pickup on Sunday evening. The hotel checkout is at midday, so he books a late checkout for his parents directly with the hotel.
The last visit. Rukhsana wants to pray at the Haram before leaving, so Imran asks the hotel reception to call the room 45 minutes before pickup, and tells his parents the car leaves at the booked time.
Status. Both bookings read Confirmed within the day. Imran sends his parents one message with the pickup time, terminal, flight number and, once assigned, the vehicle registration, and asks for a read-back of the details rather than a simple yes.
Checklist before you book
- Check that every departing traveller flies from Jeddah, and list each flight number, date and departure time.
- Take the terminal for each flight from the ticket or the airline, never from memory.
- Look up each airline’s check-in and bag-drop cut-off.
- Fill in the five-row table and be generous with the road row.
- For any flight after midnight, confirm the pickup falls on the evening before.
- Agree checkout, late checkout or a day room with the hotel directly.
- Count people, suitcases, hand luggage and cartons separately for each departure.
- Choose train or road; if any traveller has several cases or needs help walking, choose the road.
- Make one booking per departure time, more than 48 hours before pickup, and check the account until it says Confirmed.
- Put the terminal, any mobility help and the hotel entrance you were told about in the notes.
- Message the travellers the plan and have them repeat it back.
Book your Makkah to Jeddah Airport journey
The road from Makkah to Jeddah Airport is short on the map and unforgiving on the clock, so give the pickup the same attention as the flight. Open the Pilgrim Taxi ride finder, type your Makkah hotel as the pickup and Jeddah’s airport as the destination, compare the vehicles that suit your family and luggage, and book every departure well over 48 hours before it leaves.
