Put this leg in place

Getting from Dammam to Makkah for Umrah comes down to three routes: fly from King Fahd International Airport to Jeddah and take a car to your Makkah hotel, take the train west as far as Riyadh and continue from there, or go the whole way by road in a booked vehicle from your door. There is no passenger railway between Dammam and Makkah, so every option involves a car for at least one leg. The right choice depends less on the map than on who is travelling, how much luggage the family carries and how the party copes with a very long day.

This guide is for families in the Eastern Province, in Dammam, Al-Khobar, Dhahran, Jubail and Al-Ahsa, and for relatives abroad arranging the trip for them. It compares the three routes side by side, explains what official sources say about the railway and the miqat on the eastern approach, and shows which journeys Pilgrim Taxi can drive for each route and how to book them. It does not give religious rulings; for those, ask a qualified scholar and follow the official guidance in the Nusuk app.

Dammam to Makkah for Umrah: the three routes compared

Families often start by asking which route is quickest. A better question is which route puts the least strain on the most fragile member of the party. This table compares them on the things that usually decide it.

Flight to Jeddah, then car Train to Riyadh, then onward Road from your door
Legs to arrange Home to the airport, the flight, Jeddah Airport to Makkah Home to the station, the train, then a flight or a long road leg from Riyadh One journey, or two with a night on the way
Luggage Airline allowances apply Rail allowances, then the onward leg Limited only by the vehicle you book
Older relatives Airports at both ends, but the shortest time seated Two changes of mode No changes, but a very long time in the car
Young children Short but busy Busy, with several handovers Long; needs planned breaks
Ihram timing A question for your scholar before you board Depends on the onward leg Linked to the miqat on the road
What we can drive Jeddah Airport to your Makkah hotel, and back Riyadh to Makkah, if you continue by road The whole journey inside Saudi Arabia

The rest of this guide takes each route in turn.

Is there a train from Dammam to Makkah?

No. Saudipedia’s list of railways in Saudi Arabia describes the Riyadh to Dammam passenger line, established in 1985 and running via Al-Ahsa, and separately the Haramain High Speed Railway, which links Makkah and Madinah and serves Jeddah. The list shows no passenger line joining the two networks. Saudipedia’s page on transportation in Dammam gives the passenger line as 449 km long, connecting Riyadh with Dammam through Al-Ahsa and Abqaiq.

So a family from the Eastern Province who likes the train can use it for the first part of the journey only. At Riyadh they still need to continue west, either by flying to Jeddah or by road.

When the train to Riyadh makes sense

The train suits families who already live near Dammam station or Al-Ahsa, who would rather not do the first stretch by road, and who plan to spend a night in Riyadh anyway, perhaps with relatives. It makes less sense for a family carrying a week of luggage, because every change of mode means lifting cases again. For timetables, tickets and luggage rules, check directly with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR); we do not quote them.

If you continue by road from Riyadh, the Riyadh to Makkah leg is a long intercity journey of its own. Our Riyadh to Makkah by road guide covers that leg in detail, including where families break it. For a pickup at the Riyadh railway station, type the station name, check that the pin lands on the station and not a nearby street, and describe the meeting point in the notes.

Flying from Dammam: planning the Jeddah end

For many families going from Dammam to Makkah for Umrah, flying is the shortest route. Saudipedia places King Fahd International Airport about 22 km northwest of Dammam City. The flight takes you to Jeddah, where the ground leg to Makkah begins.

Jeddah Airport to your Makkah hotel

From King Abdulaziz International Airport to central Makkah is about 94 to 97 km on our live route checks. Planning matters here because the flight and baggage reclaim both come before the car, and either can run late. Our guide to beginning your plan in Jeddah sets out the arrival side.

When you book, enter the flight number at checkout. Our guide to what to enter as the flight number explains why the booking reference is not the same thing. If your flight from Dammam connects through Riyadh, give the final flight into Jeddah; the guide to which arrival to give on a connecting itinerary covers this.

Waiting at the airport

Free waiting counts from the booked pickup time, not from when the plane lands. For a family collecting several cases from a domestic carousel, set the pickup time sensibly after the scheduled arrival and add extra waiting if you expect delay.

Class Free waiting After that
Economy 15 minutes SAR 1.50 per minute
Business and Executive, Staria VIP van, H1 family van 30 minutes SAR 2.00 per minute
Minibus (Hiace or Coaster) and coach 30 minutes SAR 2.50 per minute
Premium SUV (Tahoe or Yukon) 45 minutes SAR 2.50 per minute
Luxury (S-Class) 60 minutes SAR 4.00 per minute

Extra waiting can be added at checkout in 15-minute steps up to two hours (15, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes), priced at the class’s per-minute rate. The driver’s instructions show the total. Waiting beyond what was booked is never promised.

Ihram when flying from Dammam

A family flying to Jeddah for Umrah needs to settle when and where to enter ihram before boarding. This is a religious question. Ask your scholar, and check the Nusuk guidance.

Arriving late at night

An evening flight from Dammam can land in Jeddah at an hour when older relatives are already exhausted. Some families split the arrival: a short journey to a Jeddah hotel that night, and Jeddah to Makkah the next morning. Our guide to an overnight in Jeddah before Makkah shows how to book it as two journeys.

Eastern Province to Makkah by road

Travelling from the Eastern Province to Makkah by road with a booked driver means crossing most of the width of the country. We do not quote a distance for a Dammam or Khobar pickup, because it depends on your exact address; type it into the ride finder and check the distance in the route summary before you pay. We never quote journey times.

What families need to know is that this is not a day trip in any ordinary sense. It suits parties with a lot of luggage, relatives who cannot manage airports, or families who simply prefer one vehicle from door to door.

Pickups across the Eastern Province

A road journey can start from any address you type, not only from Dammam. Families in Jubail, Dhahran, Al-Khobar or Al-Ahsa should type the full address, confirm the pin on the map and read the route summary before paying. Some residential compounds have a gate the driver must use and a guard who needs a name; put both in the booking notes, with the traveller’s mobile number, so the driver can call on arrival. If relatives from two addresses are travelling together, add the second home as a stop in journey order rather than booking two cars.

Where the road trip is usually broken

Most families break the road journey at least once. Riyadh is the natural midpoint for many, and some families stay with relatives there. Others go further and stay in Taif before the final leg; from the Makkah Clock Tower area to the Taif InterContinental is about 106 km on our route checks.

Each overnight stop means the trip becomes two or three separate journeys, each booked with its own pickup time and at least 48 hours’ notice. That has an advantage: if the family wants a slower start on the second morning, only that journey’s time needs to be right.

The miqat on the road from the east

An Eastern Province family driving west is on the same approach the Saudi Press Agency calls the Al-Sayl Al-Kabeer route, used by pilgrims coming from Najd and the east of the Arabian Peninsula. The agency’s feature puts that miqat mosque roughly 80 km short of the Grand Mosque, beside the highway into Makkah.

Your scholar decides the ihram question for your family, including what changes if you sleep in Taif first. Our part is practical: the mosque can be entered as a named stop on the final journey, placed before the hotel, with a line in the notes saying who will use it and for roughly how long. Parking there is managed on the day, so we make no promise about it.

Which journeys to book for each route

Once the route is chosen, the bookings follow. Each is one pickup and one destination, with up to eight stops in journey order.

Route Journeys to book with Pilgrim Taxi Journeys you arrange elsewhere
Flight Jeddah Airport to Makkah hotel; Makkah hotel to Jeddah Airport for the flight home Home to King Fahd International Airport and back; the flights
Flight with a Jeddah night Jeddah Airport to Jeddah hotel; Jeddah hotel to Makkah hotel; Makkah to Jeddah Airport As above
Train and road Riyadh to Makkah hotel (with the miqat stop if advised); Makkah home or to Riyadh Home to the station; the train
Road all the way Home to overnight stop; overnight stop to Makkah hotel; the return journeys Nothing else

All of these journeys start and end inside Saudi Arabia, and all need at least 48 hours’ notice when booked online.

Choosing a vehicle for the leg you are booking

The search shows only vehicle classes that pass the capacity check for your party and bags. The question for an Eastern Province family is which leg carries the most. On the flight route, the Jeddah Airport pickup carries every case the family checked in. On the road route, the vehicle carries everything from your front door, including items you would never take on a plane.

Two live checks give a sense of scale: a party of four adults with four large cases sees only the Premium SUV class and above, and five adults with five cases see only seven-seat vehicles and above. For anything in between, our guide to matching suitcases to the vehicle lists seats and bag space by class. On a cross-country road day, a size up is rarely wasted.

Worked example: the Haddad family from Al-Khobar

Yusuf and Mariam Haddad live in Al-Khobar with their three children, aged twelve, nine and five. Mariam’s mother, Salma, lives with them and uses a walking stick. They want to perform Umrah during the winter holiday.

Choosing the route. Yusuf likes the idea of the train to Riyadh. Mariam points out that Salma would have to change from car to train to car, then sit through the long road leg from Riyadh. The family weigh the road trip from home, but Salma cannot sit for that long. They choose to fly from King Fahd International Airport to Jeddah, and they ask their imam about ihram for the flight.

The Jeddah end. Six passengers, five large cases and six cabin bags, with a child seat for the youngest. The search offers seven-seat vehicles and larger. They choose the H1 family van, which includes 30 minutes of free waiting, and add 45 minutes of extra waiting at checkout, so the driver’s instructions show 75 minutes from the booked pickup time, 30 free and 45 paid. In the notes Mariam writes that Salma walks slowly and needs help with the step into the van.

Paying and checking. Mariam books more than 48 hours ahead and pays online in full. She waits until the status reads Confirmed before telling the family the plan is fixed, and shares the driver’s name and vehicle details when the driver-assigned email arrives.

Going home. They book Makkah to Jeddah Airport for the flight back to Dammam once their return flight is ticketed, again with more than 48 hours to spare.

The return to the Eastern Province

The return is its own set of journeys, and it need not mirror the outward trip. A family who drove west may fly home, and a family who flew may prefer to end the trip in Madinah first.

  • Flying home from Jeddah. Makkah to Jeddah Airport is about 91 km from the Hilton Jabal Omar on our route checks. Our guide to the Makkah to Jeddah Airport journey covers timing the pickup against your flight.
  • Road home. Book Makkah to your overnight stop and the stop to your Eastern Province address as separate journeys.
  • Not sure yet. If the family has not decided how long to stay, our guide to booking the return later without leaving it too late suggests setting a reminder well ahead of the 48-hour limit.

Booking, changes and cancellation

Pilgrim Taxi takes full payment online. Payment secures a provisional request, the status should update within 1 to 12 hours, and the journey is booked only when it reads Confirmed. Each journey has a minimum booking value equivalent to £40. If you book for a parent or relative, the checkout asks for the traveller’s name, the traveller’s phone and an emergency contact.

If a flight from Dammam is retimed, you can ask for a new pickup time from your account, as long as the original pickup has not passed. If the booking team approves it, a £5 fee, shown in your booking currency, is added to the cash you hand the driver. Anything other than the time, such as a different airport, hotel, party size or vehicle, cannot be edited online. If you cancel, the booking is subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept), whenever you cancel; if we or the transport partner cancel, or cannot supply the journey and you do not accept an alternative, the refund is in full.
