You can book an Umrah return transfer later, after the outward journey is already confirmed, as long as you book it as its own journey and do so at least 48 hours before the pickup. In practice, aim well ahead of that limit. Before you book the return, you need four facts: the flight’s date and time, the departure airport, where the travellers will sleep the last night, and how many people and bags are going. Once those are fixed, book straight away, then watch for the status to read Confirmed. Leaving the return until the final two days turns a simple booking into a race against the notice period.
This guide is for the organiser, often at home, who has settled the arrival but not the departure: the return flight is open, the family might extend, or they might fly home from Madinah instead of Jeddah. Why the Umrah return transfer is its own journey
Every Pilgrim Taxi journey has one pickup place and one destination, and they must be different. A there-and-back plan is therefore two journeys, each with its own date and time. The outward booking from the airport to the hotel does not contain an unused “return half” waiting to be activated.
That has three consequences for the organiser:
- The outward confirmation does not cover the way home. Tell the travellers plainly which leg is booked. Our note on four clear words for your travel status suggests wording that avoids “transport is sorted” when only half of it is.
- The return is priced when you book it. Do not assume it will cost the same as the outward journey. Routes differ by direction because of one-way systems and junctions: our live checks found about 94 to 97 km from Jeddah Airport to central Makkah, but about 91 km from the Hilton Jabal Omar back to Jeddah Airport. Vehicle, date and party size can differ too.
- The return can differ in every detail. A different hotel, a different airport, fewer travellers, more bags. It is a new journey, not a mirror image.
The 48-hour rule and why it is only the last line
Online bookings need at least 48 hours’ notice before pickup. If you search inside that window, the ride finder shows a message that the journey must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.
Treat 48 hours as a hard floor, not a target. After you pay, the booking is a provisional request. The booking team updates the status within 1 to 12 hours, and the journey is booked only when it reads Confirmed. If the transport partner cannot supply the journey and no suitable alternative is accepted, you receive a full refund for the affected journey, but at that point you still need a way to the airport. The earlier you book, the more room there is to solve that calmly.
So a return booked 49 hours before pickup is technically possible, yet it leaves little margin for confirmation, for a question from the booking team, or for a relative who misread the flight time.
What to decide before you book the Umrah return journey to the airport
The Umrah return journey to the airport depends on facts that are often the last to settle. Decide them in this order, because each one shapes the next.
1. The flight: date, time and airport
Start with the airline booking, not a family memory of it. Note the flight number, date, departure time in Saudi local time, and the departure airport. 2. The airline’s check-in deadline
Look up the check-in and boarding deadlines on the airline’s own information for that flight. Saudi Arabia’s aviation regulator, the General Authority of Civil Aviation, lists among passengers’ obligations that they must arrive at the airport at the specified time and be at the gate according to the carrier’s instructions. The pickup time is worked back from that deadline, not from the departure time.
3. The last night’s hotel
The pickup is where the travellers sleep before they fly. If they move from Makkah to Madinah late in the trip, or change hotels, the pickup changes too. Our guide on your travel day and your hotel night explains how early-morning flights can put the pickup on the calendar day before people expect.
4. The party and the bags
Count who is flying on that flight, and their large bags and cabin bags. Numbers often change on the way home: a relative leaves early, shopping adds a case, Zamzam water or gifts add weight. The search shows only vehicle classes that pass the capacity check for the numbers entered, so the count decides the vehicle.
5. Any special requirements
Child seats, an infant seat, a booster or a wheelchair requirement are added in the search. If they were needed on the way out, they are probably needed on the way back, but they must be added again for the new journey.
When to book the transfer home
The right moment to book is as soon as those facts are fixed, not a set number of days before the flight. That said, most families fall into one of three patterns.
The flight home is already booked. Everything except the last night’s hotel is usually known. If the hotel is also known, there is no reason to wait. Book the return when you book the arrival.
The flight is booked but the family may extend. Decide what would trigger an extension and by when. Book the return once that decision point has passed. If an extension is still possible and you book anyway, remember that only the pickup time can be changed online, subject to approval; a different hotel or airport cannot.
The flight home is not yet booked. You cannot book the transport before the flight, because you do not know the time, the airport or the deadline. A reminder plan for the organiser
The most common reason an Umrah return transfer is booked too late is not indecision. It is that nobody owned the job. A simple reminder plan fixes that.
- When the arrival is booked, write down “Return: not yet booked” at the top of the family plan, with the reason (for example, “flight open” or “hotel not final”).
- Set a calendar reminder for the decision date. This is the day by which the open question must be answered: the extension, the hotel, or the flight.
- Set a second reminder a week before the likely departure. If the return is still not booked, this is the prompt to make the missing decision rather than wait for it.
- Set a final reminder at least three days before the likely pickup, so the booking is made with at least a day to spare before the 48-hour limit, leaving time for the status to reach Confirmed.
- Name one person responsible. If you are organising from home, it is you. If a relative in Saudi Arabia is taking over, hand over clearly and tell them the decision date.
The reminders are for you, not the travellers. Parents in the middle of their Umrah should not be the ones noticing that the ride home has not been arranged.
A worked example: Halima’s open return
Adam, in Glasgow, has booked his mother Halima and his aunt Rashida an arrival transfer from Jeddah Airport to their Makkah hotel. It reads Confirmed. Their return flight is booked from Jeddah, but Halima is considering adding three nights in Madinah at the end of the trip, which would mean flying home from Madinah (Medina) instead.
Decision point. Adam and his mother agree that she will decide about Madinah by the end of her first week. He sets a calendar reminder for that day, and a second one three days before the Jeddah flight.
Scenario A: she stays in Makkah. On the decision day, Adam books the return: pickup at the Makkah hotel, destination Jeddah Airport, two adults, two large bags and two cabin bags plus one extra case for gifts. He works the pickup time back from the airline’s check-in deadline. The booking reads Confirmed the same day.
Scenario B: she goes to Madinah. The airline changes the ticket to depart from Madinah. Adam now needs two journeys: Makkah hotel to Madinah hotel, and Madinah hotel to Madinah Airport. Makkah to Madinah is about 439 km by road; the final airport run is much shorter. He books both once the airline confirms the new flight.
Either way, nothing was booked on a guess. The open question had a date, and the date had a reminder.
Working the pickup time back from the flight
Once the facts are settled, the pickup time for the Umrah return journey to the airport is worked backwards, one block at a time. We do not quote journey times, because they vary widely with traffic, the time of day and the season, so each block is something you estimate generously for your own situation.
- Start from the airline’s check-in or bag-drop deadline, not the departure time. That is the moment the travellers must be in the queue with their bags.
- Add time inside the airport: walking from the drop-off point to the right terminal and desk, with luggage, for travellers who may be tired or slow.
- Add the road journey, using the distance in the route summary as a guide to scale. About 91 km from a central Makkah hotel to Jeddah Airport is a different proposition from a short airport run in Madinah.
- Add a generous margin for traffic, especially around prayer times and in busy seasons near the Haram.
- Add time at the hotel: checking out, bringing bags down and walking to the agreed meeting point, because where a vehicle can stop near the Haram is managed on the day.
The result is the pickup time you enter. If it lands very early in the morning, check which calendar date that is. A 03:00 pickup for a morning flight belongs to the same date as the flight, but many families think of it as “the night before” and enter the wrong day.
When a relative in Saudi Arabia takes over the booking
Sometimes the organiser at home hands the return over to someone already travelling, such as a brother who is with the parents and knows the plan better by the second week. That works well if the handover is explicit.
Tell them the decision date, what is still open, the account or email the booking should use, and that the return does not exist until it reads Confirmed. If the flight changes after you have booked the return
Airline schedules do change. The General Authority of Civil Aviation’s guide to passenger rights sets out what airlines owe passengers when a flight is cancelled, including an alternative flight or a full refund for the affected journey of the ticket. What it does not do is update your ground transport.
When the airline changes the return flight:
- Same airport, different time or date. Use “Request a new pickup time” in your account. An approved new time carries a £5 rescheduling fee, converted into the booking currency and added to the cash paid to the driver at pickup. A rejected request costs nothing. The request stays pending until the booking team approves it.
- Different airport or pickup hotel. This is not a time change. Contact the booking team with the booking reference and the new details. Alternatively, book a new journey and request cancellation of the old one, but bookings are subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) if the customer cancels, so read the cancellation and refund policy first.
- Fewer or more travellers. Passenger numbers cannot be changed online; ask the booking team.
This is also why it pays to book the return once the facts are settled rather than on a guess. A booking made on a guessed airport is the kind that cannot be fixed with a time change.
Visa length and the latest possible return
When a family considers extending, check that the travellers’ visa or entry permission covers the extra days. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office summarises the entry requirements for Saudi Arabia, including the length of stay allowed under different visa types, and the conditions of the visa itself are the final word. An extension that the visa does not allow is not a transport question, but it changes when the return journey has to happen.
A saved search is not a booking
It is tempting to run the return search early, see a suitable vehicle, and assume it will still be there. A search result reserves nothing. The same caution applies to the account’s “Book again at today’s price” option on a past journey. It reloads that journey’s route and stops and recalculates the price, which is handy for repeating a trip. It does not reverse the route, so it will not turn the arrival into the journey home. Enter the return fresh, with the hotel as the pickup and the airport as the destination.
Checklist: booking the Umrah return transfer later
- Write “Return: not yet booked” and the reason at the top of the family plan.
- Agree a decision date for whatever is still open: flight, hotel, extension or airport.
- Set reminders for the decision date, a week before departure, and three days before the likely pickup.
- Confirm the flight number, date, time and departure airport from the airline booking.
- Look up the airline’s check-in deadline and work the pickup time back from it.
- Confirm the last night’s hotel by its full name and address.
- Count travellers and bags for the flight home, including gifts and extra cases.
- Add child seats or a wheelchair requirement again for the return journey.
- Book at least 48 hours before pickup, and preferably days earlier.
- Check the status reads Confirmed and tell the travellers which legs are now booked.
